Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (above, seated) signed two pro-LGBTQ bills into law on Friday, May 31: one banning conversion therapy on minors, and another making it easier for trans and non-binary people to update their birth certificates and other official state IDs.

Mental health care providers in the state will no longer be able to subject anyone under the age of 18 to the dangerous and debunked practice of so-called "conversion therapy," which seeks to change a person's sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Those found in violation of the new law will be "subject to disciplinary action by the appropriate licensing board." The advertising of conversion therapy will now be considered a deceptive trade practice under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act.

Colorado is the 18th state to ban conversion therapy on minors, with Maine becoming the 17th state to have done so earlier this week. Washington, D.C. also has a ban in place.

With the signing of Jude’s Law, Coloradans will be able to update their birth certificates, driver's licenses and other ID documents to either a male, female, or X gender marker, without surgery, a doctor's note, or court order, according to One Colorado. It goes into effect at the start of 2020.

"The strong bipartisan support of both of these bills further demonstrates that LGBTQ equality should be a nonpartisan issue, and we applaud the Republicans who stood with our community," said One Colorado Executive Director Daniel Ramos in a statement.
