Colton Haynes’ mother has succumbed to liver cancer, the actor announced in a heart-wrenching post on Instagram.
Last month, Haynes opened up about his mom, Dana Denise Mitchell, and her struggle to afford in-home hospice care after her cancer became terminal. The Arrow star and his five siblings were able to crowdfund more than $10,000 to cover Mitchell’s end-of-life care.
“It’s heartbreaking,” he wrote on February 20. “My strong mother has always been the anchor of this family and our best friend. Now we’re being forced to say goodbye to her.”
On Saturday, Haynes took to Instagram again—this time, to break the news of his mother’s passing:
“Today, I lost my best friend, the love of my life: My momma. Words can’t express how incredible this woman was. I have so many things to say but I’m in a state of shock. I will always love you, Momma.”
Haynes and his mother had a tumultuous relationship: He told Out that Mitchell felt “blindsided and dismayed” when he came out as a teenager. He was even told that his estranged father killed himself because Haynes was gay.
Since then, though, the two have rebuilt their relationship: Mitchell even walked Haynes down the aisle when he married husband Jeff Leatham last November.
Leatham also posted a tribute to Mitchell, sharing a video of her and Haynes dancing together.
