After 98 Years, Converse Introduces New, More Comfortable Chuck Taylor All-Stars
Converse's Chuck Taylor sneakers are getting a makeover for the first time in the shoe's 98-year history: "The Converse Chuck II" will look pretty much the same on the outside, but the new kicks will be kinder to your feet—with arch support, a breathable lining and cushioned soles.
Launching July 28, the Chuck II will retail for $70 for lowtops and $75 for hightops, and will come in black, white or red. Other new features include a padded tongue, perforated suede lining and more durable canvas material.
Chuck II will sport Nike's patented Lunarlon foam lining for extra cushion.
Converse nearly went bankrupt before Nike bought the company in 2003 and turned things around, shepherding collaborations with celebrities, designers, and iconic companies like Disney and DC Comics. But the new shoe isn't a spinoff—it's an upgrade to the classic Chuck Taylor.
"(We're) ushering in not just a new sneaker, but a completely new way of thinking," said Converse CEO Jim Calhoun.
