On the LogoTV Series Operation: Vacation, do-gooders are rewarded with trips of a lifetime to some of the most amazing spots in the world like Rome, Barcelona…and a couple of fantastic resort towns in British Columbia you may have never heard of: Tofino and Haida Gwaii. So why would you — the gay and gayjacent — ever want to visit these spots? First, they’re both stunningly beautiful locales with plenty for the active traveler, and second they’re both COOOOLD at night.
This is Canada’sSurfer’s paradise — the stunning resort town on tip of Victoria Island’s western edge is where you’ll find pretty much ALL the cute Canadian surfer dudes (admittedly not a TON of guys) hanging out in the summer months. Also, somewhat surprisingly, Tofino is also where you’ll find the most highly rated luxury hotel in all of Canada– The Wickaninnish. In fact just a few weeks ago Travel & Leisure added the hotel to its All Stars list, and it came in #2 in all of Canada in the World’s Best Awards 2013.
In sum: Hot guys in wetsuits & the best hotel in Canada*.
(*second best, but that’s pretty damn close)
Don’t miss: Long Beach and Chesterman Beach, a meal, spa treatment or room (if you can splurge) at the Wick Inn.
2. Haida Gwaii (aka Queen Charlotte Islands)
This is a PHENOMENAL, magical, little-traveled corner of the planet — perfect for those who are more than a little bit outdoorsy and
like love to fish/hike/admire unspoiled nature. The area is a vast archipelago on the North Coast of British Columbia (north of Victoria Island) named for its locals, the Haida people. Haida Gwaii is made up of two main islands: Graham Island in the north and Moresby Island in the south, along with more than 150 smaller islands. What’s there to do? Not a lot of sightseeing or bars… but plenty of hiking, fishing, camping, surfing, exploring. The islands are full of wildlife, from black bear to black-tailed deer and many smaller critters. And the ocean has some of the best whale watching anywhere.
In sum: If you want to REALLY get away from it all and see primordial earth…this is the spot
Don’t miss: Totem poles and orcas!
