Coral Gables, Florida, Gives City Employees Partnership Benefits

Same-sex partner benefits come to Coral Gables, FL, via SaveDade.org

After an out lesbian police officer was denied bereavement leave for her partner’s father’s death, she has successfully lobbied the city of Coral Gables to offer equal rights to gay and lesbian partners of city employees. Acting Major Rene Tastet was backed up by the Fraternal Order of the Police and the local Save Dade organization, but it took a year for the ordinance to pass. The vote went down yesterday and was unanimous.

Coral Gables is far from the first place in Florida to offer partnership benefits. The city joins Miami, North Miami, South Miami, Miami Beach, and a bunch of other places that don’t have ‘Miami’ in their names. The state of Florida doesn’t have marriage equality… yet.
