This Father And Daughter Both Came Out As Transgender And Will Transition Together

Corey and Eric Maison have found the perfect support system in each other.

After grappling in private with their respective gender identities for years, a trans father and daughter have now come out to one another and are living together in their truth.

Their journey began four years ago when 15-year-old Corey Maison told her parents she identified as a girl.

“I wanted to make my parents proud of who I am, but I thought that they would not like me,” Corey told Tara Brown on 60 Minutes.

Little could she know that her coming out as trans was inspiring her parent Erica—now Eric—to come to terms with his own identity as a transgender man.

“When I was younger I used to wish for cancer so I would have to get a mastectomy,” he told Brown. He added that once he realized he was trans "the first feeling was relief, the second was terror."

“Fear for what my future would hold," he continued, "fear for what the rest of my life was going to look like.”

Thankfully, he found strength in his daughter's bravery and came out three years after she did. Now, the two are living as their open, authentic selves within their large family of seven.

Though Eric initially worried about what his relationship with his husband would look like after his transition, his partner told Brown that he's "still married to the same person" he fell in love with years ago.

Since coming out, Corey has documented her transition on social media to raise awareness about issues facing trans youth.

The Maison family made national headlines in September 2015 with a viral video that showed Corey being told she was finally going to begin hormone therapy.
