Could A "But, I'm A Cheerleader" Musical Be Headed To Broadway?

"I would love to direct a full blown musical," says "Cheerleader" director Jamie Babbit.

It's been 17 years since the lesbian cult comedy But, I'm A Cheerleader hit theaters, and now the movie's star, Natasha Lyonne and director Jamie Babbit have reunited for a new film, Addicted to Fresno.

Fresno, starring Lyonne and Judy Greer as sisters in trouble after one accidentally kills someone, is playing the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, going on now.

Babbit has focused mostly on television in recent years, directing episodes of shows like Girls, Looking, The L Word and Orange is the New Black.

But she tells Same Same she's also working on a musical version of Cheerleader for the Great White Way.

"I would love to direct a full blown musical. Maybe sometime soon," said Babbit. "They did a musical version of But I’m a Cheerleader in London with the Kinky Boots director. If they find investors I know they want to mount it as a musical on Broadway!"

A But, I'm A Cheerleader musical?! We can already picture the pom-pom dance numbers.
