Councilman Says Anyone Offended By His Gay Slurs Needs To Get Over Themselves

"They call themselves homos, they call themselves gays," said councilman Garry Mallett.

An Australian politician caused quite a stir when he let loose with a string of homophobic slurs.

At a community services meeting last week, Hamilton city councilor Garry Mallett reportedly commented on the fact that a report was printed on pink paper.

"What's with the homo color in our agenda?" he asked two female staffers. "[Are we looking after] the gays and fags now?"

On Monday, Mallett said anyone offended by his remarks should get over themselves.

Most people in the gay community "couldn't give a rat's arse" about his language, Mallet insisted. "They call themselves homos, they call themselves gays, they call themselves fags, they call themselves queer. They are proud of being pink. Many homosexuals freely and willingly identify with these words. Indeed, to some extent, homosexuals have 'commandeered' these words such that many non-homosexuals feel uncomfortable using them."

Gee, sorry?

Mallett claimed not to remember making the remarks but insisted if he did it was simply a “light-hearted jest."

By Tuesday, though, he was offering an apology—of sorts: "Prior to the recent community and services meeting I made some light-hearted comments to staff referring to the unusual use of pink paper for one of the reports for the meeting," Mallett said.

"Unfortunately some took offense at these comments, which were not directed at anyone in particular. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my comments as no offense was intended."
