Out Coach Curt Miller Named General Manager Of Connecticut Sun

The move is a historic one for the WNBA.

Nearly a year after Curt Miller was appointed head coach of the Connecticut Sun—becoming the first openly gay man to lead a professional sports team—the organization has promoted him to the position of franchise general manager.

“This was really important for two reasons,” commented Sun president Mitchell Etess. “One, it showed our confidence in Curt and his coaching staff for the job they’ve done this year. And two, it sends a message to our players, and to the entire basketball community, that there is no change in the direction of the franchise.”

Miller will be taking over from Chris Sienko, who announced this past August that he would be stepping down from the position.

“Curt is the right person for this job,” Sienko explained. “His basketball knowledge is off-the-charts and his ability to adapt, make quick and critical decisions and bring a team together is second-to-none."

"I feel very comfortable handing off the reins to Curt," he continued. "I know he respects the position and understands the responsibilities that come with it. He is clearly ready to go and our athletes support this appointment as well.”

"I've always had a side of me that wants to help youth and help people who are struggling with who they are," Miller told Outsports last year after coming out.

"I hope my story can be an inspiration to others that you can chase your dreams of being a coach or working in sports as a gay man."

As Miller continues to move up the ranks in the WNBA, it's clear that these dreams are getting closer to becoming realities.
