CW's "Black Lightning" Adds Another Queer Character

Chantal Thuy will play Anissa Pierce's super-strong girlfriend, Grace Choi.

The CW's Black Lightning has upped the network's roster of LGBT heroes: Chantal Thuy has been cast as Grace Choi, a bartenderwho befriends Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) and eventually becomes her love interest. Choi is also Pierce's confident as she comes into her own as the superhero Thunder.

Grace will be a recurring character on the show, Variety reports.

Thunder and Grace

In DC Comics, Grace was a bouncer at meta-human nightclub and, alongside Thunder, a member of the Outsiders. She was later revealed to be a member of an offshoot tribe of Amazons, the race of female warriors Wonder Women belonged to.

At a recent comic-con appearance, Williams said she didn't know much Anissa or her sexuality, but expected the scripts to follow the comics pretty closely.

"I just want to stay true to the story of Black Lightning and to that world. And if that's what that world is, I'm going to commit to it and go all the way."

Luckily, bringing in Thuy suggests Anissa will retain her queerness in the TV series, as well. Other additions to the show include Jill Scott as Lady Eve and Marvin "Krondon" Jones as Tobias Whale, both villains, with Cress Williams playing the title hero, a.k.a. Anissa's father Jefferson Pierce.

The CW released a trailer for Black Lightning back in May, but the series won't make its premiere until 2018. Created by Salim and Mara Brock Akil (Being Mary Jane, Girlfriends),its the first of the network's many superhero shows to feature an African-American protagonist .
