He may be a bully, but Billy is one of the sexiest things about the second season of Stranger Things, now streaming on Netflix.
Before he nabbed the role of Hawkins High School’s unhinged hunk, Dacre Montgomery submitted an intensely spirited audition tape, in which he dances shirtless to ’80s hits “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Come on Eileen.” Although it’s not visible in the video, the 22-year-old Australian actor says he was rocking a nude-colored G-string.
“I just kind of wanted to make a bit of a splash with the Duffers, because I assumed they would be getting so many tapes,” the Power Rangers star tells GQ.
“I get so self-conscious, so it was a nice reprieve from that, to be able to do that at home, during the day, while none of my family was home, and just go for it, to just have that moment of freedom, and be able to show them that I can have that uninhibited freedom. And I was like, Okay, what better way to do that than to oil myself up, put on a G-string, and… yeah.”
Montgomery has gotten to show off that toned torso in the sci-fi series, most memorably during a homoerotic shower scene with rival Steve that has some fans wondering if Billy’s hostility stems from his repressed sexuality.
“Somebody touched on that the other day,” Montgomery recently told The Huffington Post. “’Is Billy attracted to Steve?’ And I was like, ‘No, I don’t think he is.’ I don’t think it’s like this confused, homoerotic kind of thing. I think it’s literally he’s threatened by all these characters in his life.”
Another episode shows Billy berated by his abusive father, who uses an anti-gay slur. Montgomery called the language “extremely jarring,” but says it was important to keep it in the script: “It does scream so many things about the time and about how freely this particular character [uses] this word. I think it says a lot more than what a douchebag my dad is.”
