Dallas Trans Woman in Recovery After Brutal Beating

Police are investigating the incident, including the possibility that it could've been a hate crime.

A black transgender woman in Dallas, Texas, is recovering from a series of injuries after a brutal beating that left her unconscious.

According to Metro Weekly, 23-year-old Muhlaysia Booker was hospitalized last Friday, April 12 after suffering multiple injuries, including a broken wrist and facial fractures.

Booker reportedly got into a physical altercation with a group of men after a minor traffic accident. The men who attacked her allegedly hurled homophobic slurs her way—and footage of the fight was shared on social media. (Warning: The footage is violent and may be disturbing to some.)

Police confirmed to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that the fight rendered Booker unconscious. Her father, Pierre Booker, also told the news outlet that this isn't the first time his daughter has faced physical violence because of her gender identity.

"This don't need to happen to nobody else's kid, so we pray that everything comes out justifiable," he added. "We know the Lord works in mysterious ways."

In a Facebook post, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings assured locals that police were investigating the incident, and not ruling out the fact that it might have been a hate crime.

"Those who did this do not represent how Dallasites feel about our thriving LGBTQ community," Rawlings wrote. "We will not stand for this kind of behavior."

Booker isn't the first trans woman from Texas to experience physical violence this year. Back in January, police in Houston confirmed that a suspect was at large after shooting and injuring a transgender woman named Pinky.
