Dame Judi Dench Defends “Good Friend” Kevin Spacey

Anthony Rapp accused the disgraced actor of sexual misconduct last October.

Dame Judi Dench has suddenly become one of Kevin Spacey's most unlikely supporters.

Anthony Rapp accused Spacey last October of making sexual advances toward him when Spacey was 26 and Rapp was 14. More men have since accused Spacey of sexual misconduct, and many have credited Rapp for inspiring them to come forward.

Following Rapp's accusations, Spacey, who subsequently came out publicly as gay, was fired from Netflix’s House of Cards. He was also digitally removed from the film All the Money in the World and replaced with Christopher Plummer.

Dench, 83, who worked with Spacey on the 2011 film The Shipping News, recently came to the disgraced actor's defense after receiving a lifetime achievement award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, the Independent reports.

“I can’t approve, in any way, of the fact that—whatever he has done—that you then start to cut him out of the films," the Tea With the Dames star declared.

"Are we to do what happened when he was replaced with Christopher Plummer? Are we to do that throughout history? Are we to go back throughout history and anyone who has misbehaved in any way, or who has broken the law, or who has committed some kind of offense, are they always going to be cut out? Are we going to extrude them from our history? I don’t know."

"I don’t know about the conditions of it, but nevertheless he is, and was, a most wonderful actor," the Oscar winner continued. "I can’t imagine what he is doing now. And a good friend."

Dench has previously said she’s fine with the #MeToo movement as long as "it doesn’t get out of hand."
