Darren Criss has a team of people doing his hair and makeup each night before he steps out on stage to play transgender rocker Hedwig in Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch — and for good reason.

The 28-year-old musical dreamboat recently tried to recreate the full drag look on Billboard’s pop editor Jason Lipshutz and the results were beyond tragic.

“My inner queen is like, ‘honey no,'” he jokes.

Before giving his frightening makeover, Criss chatted about trying his hand at a solo music career in the future. “Eventually in time and place,” he said. “I want to be able to paint as many colors with as large of a palette as possible. But just working on projects that I love — I mean, Hedwig is a dream come true.”
