Daryl Dixon Of "The Walking Dead" Is "Prison Gay" Says Actor Norman Reedus

Norman Reedus, who plays the crossbow-wielding badass Daryl Dixon on AMC's The Walking Dead, says the fan favorite is "prison gay."

Reedus had previously said that Daryl was a virgin, but in a GQ cover story, Reedus explains that Dixon is more likely just super awkward and lacking "game."

"He's definitely not a ladies' man or thinks of himself as having enough confidence to be that type of person," the 45-year-actor said. "I want to play him searching for confidence, not full of confidence, you know?"

Dixon's sexuality and potential coming-out have been discussed, Robert Kirkman — creator of the comic on which the show is based — wrote in  response to a fan letter, perhaps referring to a discussion Reedus had with showrunner Frank Darabont:

I remember Frank Darabont, after the first season, we were at a party in L.A. He said, "I've got an idea for Daryl. He's gay. Would you be interested in that?" I was like, "Let me hear you out." He said, "Well, he's prison gay. Like, you'll catch him looking at a member of the same sex, but if you mention it to him, he'll just stab you and be like,What the fuck? He will never admit it." I was like, "That'll blow minds—let's do that." And he said, "I knew I hired you for a reason."

Not sure if that's the proper definition of "prison gay" — which seems more like a "necessity as the mother of invention" kind of thing — but let's hope the folks behind The Walking Dead drop the soap on Daryl's sexuality when it premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9pm ET on AMC.
