Daughter Melissa Says Joan Rivers' Death Was "100% Preventable"

Eight months after Joan River's death, her daughter, Melissa, is speaking out about the circumstances surrounding her death,  calling them "preventable."

In a recent interview with Today's Matt Lauer, Melissa described what it was like to learn that her legendary mom, who was only supposed to be undergoing a minor procedure on her vocal chords, was in critical condition.

"I just couldn't believe what I was seeing," she said. "It becomes very surreal. There's my mom and machines and doctors, and I think at that point it started to dawn on me a little the craziness that was starting to ensue."

Melissa has filed suit against Yorkville Endoscopy, the medical clinic where Rivers' was treated. She said that the lawsuit was meant to allow her to delve deeper into the reasons her mother ended up in a coma. Her assessment? The doctors could have done a great deal more.

"In my opinion, it was 100% preventable," she tells Lauer. "How about paying attention to the vital signs? How about having a properly equipped crash cart?

She insists its not just her family she's thinking of: "Every patient deserves better. It is my goal to make sure that this kind of horrific medical treatment never happens to anyone again."
