Davey Wavey On Why “Online Dating” Is A Good Thing On New Bravo Series

davey-waveyWhat does Davey Wavey want in a man? How about a big….heart!?

Surprised that someone like Davey Wavey, who has a huge online following on both his website and his plethora of YouTube videos where he discusses everything from sex, sexy asses, gym etiquette and, of course, workout tips, actually uses the internet to find a date?

Not really, since online dating is just as much a part of our culture as Cher’s endless final tours. No surprise that Bravo has figured out a way to make a reality series following men – both gay and straight – who are looking for love online in Online Dating Rituals Of The American Male.

In tonight’s episode, Davey, having recently moved to Los Angeles, navigates the plethora of hot men while trying to figure out if he can find something with a little more substance.

TheBacklot talked to Davey about his thoughts on dating, his experience on the show and what turns him on…and off!

TheBacklot: You don’t seem like a shy guy, so was it an easy decision to do the show?

Davey: I’m not shy. But, at the same time, I don’t often show my personal life in my YouTube videos. I enjoy keeping some mystery between myself and the people who watch my content… so showing my dating life is definitely uncharted waters for me.

Does online dating make you more hopeful that you’ll find the one? Or less hopeful?

Davey: I have mixed feelings. On one hand, online dating is great because you’re able to search for exactly what you want… it’s efficient and easy. But on the other hand, there could be a thousand people that meet your search criteria. It becomes very easy to keep moving on to the next shiny object.

Does your celebrity get in the way of your dating?

Davey: When gay guys see me online, they never believe that it’s really me. They seem to think that being popular on YouTube somehow negates the need to find guys online. Being in LA, you also have to be aware of people’s motivations. I’ve become pretty good at trusting my gut and reading people.

How do you know if you’re spending too much time online?

Davey: For me, it’s when browsing for guys starts to interfere with my work or other commitments.

Do you have a checklist for what you need in a guy?

Davey: Big heart comes first. I like a guy who is kind and nonjudgmental. If that guy happens to live in a sexy body with a handsome face, even better!

You’re fairly new to LA — do you think it’s tougher here to find substance?

Davey: Of course. LA is built around an image-oriented industry, so it’s no surprise that it attracts people who value that. I get it. And I enjoy attractive men. But there are guys out there that are more than just a pretty face. You just have to do a bit of digging.

You say in the show that you have yet to be in a long term monogamous relationship. Do you think that’s possible for gay men?

Davey: You can’t paint all gay men with the same broad brush. It’s like saying, Tiger Woods cheated on his wife… so are all straight men cheaters? Different people want different things. So far, I’ve always wanted some degree of openness.

What keeps you interested in a guy? What’s an instant turn-off?

Davey: If a guy just talks about my YouTube videos, it’s a pretty big turn off. Creating YouTube content is my job. I love it, but there’s more to me than that. If a guy can keep me on my toes, I’ll probably hang around a bit.
