David Gandy On Flirting With Guys, What Kind Of Underwear He Wears

Top model David Gandy is on the cover of February's Out magazine and, in the adjoining interview, he discusses being the object of the male gaze, leveraging himself into a brand and a certain iconic pair of white Speedos that catapulted him into superstardom.

Of his success as one of the few boldface men in the modeling business, Gandy confesses "I’m not sure there is any great secret—really, I analyzed the success of the female supermodels, and the platform they had used, and we went from there. It is about diversification and branding, making your own mark on something."

And speaking of diversification, Gnady has designed a new line of underwear for UK retailer Marks & Spencers. "I wanted the underwear to feel like a second skin," he says. "Of course it’s finding the right underwear for you and your shape—I wear 'hipsters,' but many men will prefer briefs or trunks."

He also dished on his big break, in 2007, when he appeared in an enticing ad for Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue fragrance, shot by legendary lensman Mario Testino.

"It was probably one of the most important days of my modeling life," Gandy says of the shoot, which took place on the Isle of Capri. "Obviously I didn't realize at the time quite how successful that campaign would be—if I did I probably would have been even more excited.

Any more excited and they couldn't have run the ad, David!

Gandy tells the magazine guys really don't hit on him because they know he's straight: "But I've been in the fashion industry for years where many of the creative and designers are gay, so we always flirt and have a great laugh. Usually they just try and introduce me to their hot girlfriends."

Lucky girls.
