David Sedaris, Tim Gunn And Dan Savage Come To Terms With Their "Gay Voice": WATCH

Is there a gay way of talking? And if there is, should we discourage it? That's at the core of  filmmaker David Thorpe's documentary, Do I Sound Gay?in which he interviewed linguists, historians, friends, strangers and LGBT icons like Margaret Cho, Don Lemon, and George Takei about the subject. "For many gay men, it is the last vestige of internalized homophobia," says Thorpe.

Tim Gunn admits he was appalled when he first heard his voice and had a "rude awakening" once he began hosting Project Runway. Though he jokes that he thinks he sounds less like a woman than a "very small man," author David Sedaris admits it still makes him feel good when someone can't tell he's gay. "I thought I was beyond that," the Me Talk Pretty One Day writer tells Thorpe. "What’s the problem if somebody assumes that I’m gay when I open my mouth?”

Sexpert Dan Savage offers some insight, linking childhood bullying to the stigma and shame associated with the gay voice. “Many adolescents are right to worry about how they sound because it draws violence,” he says.

Three years in the making, Do I Sound Gay? is finally in post-production but Thorpe needs help to finish it. Watch the Do I Sound Gay? trailer below, then head over to Thorpe's Kickstarter to contribute to this fascinating doc.
