"Days Of Our Lives": Will Horton Gets Engaged To Boyfriend Sonny On Valentine's Day: WATCH

Days of Our Lives broke new ground again today when gay character Will Horton (Guy Wilson) proposed to longtime boyfriend Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith), marking the first same-sex engagement on daytime television.

“I’ve been waiting for this since the day I signed on,” Smith told The Advocate. “Of course, Will said no when Sonny popped the question last month because it’s a soap and it has to be dramatic. But when I found out they were finally getting engaged, I was thrilled. Will and Sonny have been a power couple for two years now, and in the town of Salem, people don’t usually stay together that long, so they’re doing something right. It’s definitely time.”

There are gay couples on most soap operas these days, but DOOL has been ahead of the pack as far as showing the kind of physical intimacy you'd expect to see from a romantic couple.  Wilson stepped into the role Will Horton after actor Chandler Massey left the show. Wilson calls the chance to be a part of such a historic story arc  “a dream come true.”

While the reaction to Will and Sonny's relationship has been positive overall, the haters have been trolling online: "I’ve gotten hateful antigay messages though social media and it makes me sad,” Wilson reveals. “Not because someone is being mean to me [personally], but because there are some people out there who still have such vitriol for this kind of story."
