Debra Messing Joins The Cast Of "Dirty Dancing" Reboot

Will it be the time of our lives?

Debra Messing has signed on to ABC's remake of Dirty Dancing, playing Baby's mother, Marjorie Houseman. The role was originally played by Tony winner Kelly Bishop ( A Chorus Line ) in the 1987 movie with Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

In the television reboot, it's Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens, Little Miss Sunshine) that won't be put in the corner.

Alas, there's been no word on who will take up Swayze's role of Johnny, the world-wise dance instructor who seduces Baby at a Catskills vacation resort in 1963.

There have been several attempts to capitalize on the film's success, including a short lived 1988 TV show, and the 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Night set in pre-Castro Cuba.

A Dirty Dancing remake has been in the works since 2011, but has faced numerous postponements and cancellations. The success of musical theater events on network television, however, got the production back on track.

Jessica Sharzer (The L Word) is penning the adaptation, with Hamilton choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler directing the dance sequences.

Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games) and Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the original screenplay, will executive produce.
