Defiant Texas Reverend Replaces Church's Stolen Rainbow Flag For Fifth Time

You can steal her flag but not the message it represents.

The Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Austin, Texas raised the fifth rainbow flag over its marquee on the front lawn last week, after the previous four were allegedly stolen by thieves unhappy with the church’s powerful pro-LGBT stance.

The church hosts local PFLAG meetings and boasts a congregation that includes all members of the LGBT community.

In a blog post announcing her intention to replace the fourth stolen flag, Rev. Joanna Crawford said, “The flag is a symbol of our whole-hearted welcome to all who wish to walk in fellowship with us. But it’s just a symbol. That welcome, and our message of love, can never be torn down.”

In a sermon on Sunday, August 23, the defiant Rev. Crawford said the church will never back down to the vandals. “One of the things that we refuse to whisper is that we are a deliberately welcoming, inclusive place of worship, and we celebrate the lives and loves of those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer,” she said before inviting the congregation to join her in raising the new flag.

On the front lawn, while raising Live Oak’s fifth rainbow flag, Rev. Crawford made a decree:

“We hereby install this rainbow flag on our church sign so that those who drive by can see that this is a church that is deliberately welcoming and inclusive to all. This is a symbol that has stood for Pride for the LGBT community. We take our own pride in being part of this. May this sign, may this flag, serve as a beacon to all who drive by to know that they are welcome here.”

Bravo, Rev. Crawford!
