Gay “American Horror Story” Star Spooks As Edgar Allan Poe

Denis O'Hare does Halloween like a master.

Here’s a Halloween treat: Denis O'Hare stars as literary icon Edgar Allan Poe in Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive, which will premiere this month on PBS as part of the network's Emmy-winning American Masters series.

Filmmaker Eric Stange's documentary, which combines dramatized reenactments of Poe's life with readings of his Gothic tales, "explores the misrepresentations of Poe and reveals how he tapped into what it means to be human in a modern and sometimes frightening world," according to an official synopsis.

Poe famously died in 1849 under mysterious circumstances, and the cause of his death remains unknown. "The mystery around Poe's death is the least of it," says Stange. "The real question at the heart of this film is why Edgar Allan Poe continues to be one of the most popular writers in the history of Western literature—and one of the most misunderstood."

Buried Alive, narrated by Kathleen Turner, also features readings by Chris Sarandon and Ben Schnetzer.

O'Hare, 55, a Tony-winning and Emmy-nominated actor, is known for his work in films such as Milk and Dallas Buyers Club. He played a gay vampire in True Blood and appeared as a gay character in This Is Us.

A judge last season on RuPaul’s Drag Race, O'Hare asked Alaska for advice on how to play Liz Taylor in American Horror Story: Hotel. In American Horror Story: Freak Show, he memorably played a closeted gay man with a 13-inch penis.
