Brutal Colorado Attack Leaves Trans Woman’s Face Paralyzed

"We're just out trying to live our lives," says Amber Nicole.

Colorado police are searching for a group of attackers who brutally assaulted a transgender woman last weekend outside a Denver bar.

Amber Nicole, who also goes by Dom James, says she was harassed and then beaten in the early hours of April 28 as she left Tavern Lodo with friends.

The beating left Nicole with a broken jaw that required emergency surgery. Nerve damage on the right side of her face has caused partial paralysis, which, according to doctors, could be permanent.

"We're just out trying to live our lives and have fun with our peers, be with our friends, just live our lives, and people just can’t seem to see us that way," Nicole told her local CBS news affiliate through tears.

While there is no surveillance video of the attack, cell phone video shows Nicole bloodied while bystanders appear to walk by without helping.

"There’s so many people who can see an incident and stop it or do something about it, or make a report about it, but nobody does and I don’t understand why," she continued. "It feels like it’s because I’m different."

A GoFundMe page, describing Nicole as "a beloved trans performer and Denver socialite with a heart of gold," has been set up to help pay for her medical expenses and has raised about $13,000 of its $50,000 goal.

"This hate crime has shaken Amber and her closest friends and family," the page reads. "It should shake the entire community. We MUST stand for our trans sister."
