Director Lilly Wachowski Leaves Netflix Series "Sense8"

"Lilly needed to take some time off."

Sense8, the popular LGBT inclusive Netflix series that follows the lives of eight emotionally and mentally interconnected individuals across the globe, has seen some team shake-ups since the premiere of its first season, with departures from both star Aml Ameen and director Lilly Wachowski.

Ameen, who played Capheus "Van Damme" on the show, split last month, citing irreconcilable "creative differences" with producer Lilly Wachowski. Now, Wachowski, who made headlines last March after coming out as trans, has opted to leave the show as well.

Actress Jamie Clayton, who plays a trans blogger on Sense8, opened up to BuzzFeed about Wachowski's decision to leave the show, saying that the producer "needed to take some time off."

With Lilly gone, sister Lana (pictured below) will assume all directorial duties, a first for the sisters who have previously only worked together, on projects like The Matrix and Jupiter Ascending.

Though Lilly's leaving has left a hole on the Sense8 team, Clayton affirms that Lana is more than capable of taking charge for season 2.

“The way she channels her energy and creativity," she commented, "keeps me in absolute awe whenever I’m in her presence. She’s an absolute force.”

Tuppence Middleton (pictured above), who plays Icelandic DJ Riley on the show, addressed Ameen's departure: “It’s just a case of, creatively, two people having a really different idea of what they want to do.”

Ameen has since been replaced by actor Toby Onwumere, whom Middleton says the cast has embraced warmly.

Though Netflix has renewed the show for a second season, its release date has yet to be announced.
