Ross Lynch’s next big role is no walk on the beach.
Best known as the star of Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally and Teen Beach Movie franchise, the 21-year-old actor will play notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the upcoming film My Friend Dahmer.
Written and directed by Marc Meyers, My Friend Dahmer is based on Derf Backderf’s non-fiction graphic novel of the same name. The book recalls the author’s high school friendship with the young man who would go on to rape and murder at least 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Dahmer received 15 life sentences in 1992 but was killed in prison by fellow inmates within three years.
“It’s the story before the story we’re all familiar with,” Meyers tells EW of the film.
Pictures of Lynch in Dahmer glasses leaked last year, but the actor gave fans their first official look at My Friend Dahmer last week when he shared a photo of himself in character as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” to his Instagram. He also revealed that the film will receive its world premiere next month at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Meyers tells EW that he met with more than 80 actors before casting Lynch as Dahmer. “I felt that he both had the versatility as an actor and the look. I thought it was exciting that he was just ending his run as the lead of a Disney show and was the lead of their Teen Beach Movie franchise—but he looks like Jeff! And then, even more so, when you put some glasses on him.”
