Disney Stops Gendering Kids’ Halloween Costumes In New “I Am Awesome” Collection

Halloween shouldn't be about labels.

Months after Target announced it would be removing gender markers in several different departments throughout stores nationwide, Disney is starting to do the same.

The Mary Sue notes that in past years, the Disney store’s selection of Halloween costumes for kids were divided into two subsets: “Girls costumes” and “Boys costumes.”

This year, however, the retailer launched a collection of new costumes, some in collaboration with Marvel, that are no longer divided by gender. From now on, costumes in the Disney store will be marked “for kids” or “for babies.”

The move could perhaps be in response to controversy the company faced earlier this year, when people noticed the lack of Black Widow merchandise from Disney’s line of Avengers products.

Either way, the gesture is a great one, but a preview for the new collection (below) doesn't seem to include any gender nonconforming kids. Let's work on that next year, Disney.
