If you’re a fan of RuPaul, then you probably know that he is a diehard Dolly Parton stan. He even had a giant portrait of the country legend hanging prominently in his former L.A. home.
The worlds of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Dolly have converged in recent years, with Trixie Mattel transforming into her on Drag Race All Stars, and the singer herself making a cameo in the Season 12 finale.
Parton has been busy this year promoting her new Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas; her book, Songteller; and her Netflix musical Christmas on the Square, among other projects. Still, she made time to grace the cover of the latest issue of Marie Claire, where she was interviewed by Ru himself. The two discussed everything from Dolly’s daily spiritual practice to her new album, with the conversation naturally leading to the two queens’ wig collections.
When Ru revealed that he has some wigs he still wears that are almost 23 years old, he asked Dolly if she can relate.
“I don’t think I have any that I wear that are that old now, but I know what you mean. See, you’re a drag queen. Those are like costumes to you. This is my living self. I am a living drag queen,” she told Ru. “You dress up just now and then, but for me, though, I like the wigs and I wear them almost every day. So, people ask me how many wigs I have, I say, ’Well, I must have at least 365,’ because I wear one almost every day. But I actually keep my own hair the same color and I just kind of pull it up in little scrunchies around the house. But I still like to put on makeup and have my hair fluffed.”
Well, as Dolly has always said, “If I wasn’t born a woman I would have been a drag queen!”
Marie Claire also got some other Drag Race girls — including Ginger Minj, Jujubee, and Trinity the Tuck — to each ask Dolly a question, like if she really has tattoos and which song of hers was the hardest to write. Of course, Ginger already had her Dolly close encounter when she appeared in the Netflix movie Dumplin’, which features some signature Dolly tunes and was produced by the country queen.
