Dolly Parton Speaks Out About North Carolina's Anti-LGBT Law

"I think everybody should be treated great and with respect."

On her website yesterday, Dolly Parton announced the dates for the first leg of her Pure & Simple tour, which will kick-off June 3 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Many fans had wondered if Parton would perform in the state after the passing of the anti-LGBT House Bill 2, which prohibits local governments from installing protective anti-discrimination ordinances and forces trans individuals to use public restrooms based on the genders on their birth certificates.

Many musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr and Pearl Jam, have cancelled shows in protest while other artists, such as Cyndi Lauper and Laura Jane Grace, have said they'll perform, but only so they can use their concerts as a platform to rail against the hateful legislation.

“Oh, I’ve been seein’ all that commotion,” Parton commented in regards to the widespread boycott.

“A lot of people are canceling shows and all that. I have no plans to cancel the show. I think I serve better from the stage," she continued. "I think everybody should be treated great and with respect and everybody knows that about me. I can address that from the stage.”

When pressed further about her thoughts on anti-LGBT legislation in other states such as Mississippi and Tennessee, the country icon responded, “Through the years everybody has known that I have an open, generous heart and I believe that all people should be treated with respect."

She went on to say, “I really don’t like to get caught up into controversial issues, and I certainly don’t think it’s fair to the public. I can address whatever my thoughts are, if need be, from the stage.”

Parton's Pure & Simple tour is the legend's first in over two decades and will feature old favorites along with new tracks off her latest effort, Pure & Simple, which is set for release sometime this summer.

Along with her show in NC, Parton will travel to Georgia, West Virginia, Virgina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York on the first leg of her tour.
