Republicans May Try To Kill Domestic Violence Bill Over Gay Clause

Today in Republicans Getting Mad About Things We Thought Everyone Agreed Upon: House Republicans may try to block the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act because of new provisions added to the bill. These provisions include allowing Native American tribes to prosecute non-tribal members who assault their members, giving some protection to illegal immigrants who are abused, and prohibiting the denial of service to anyone because of race, religion or sexual orientation.

According to a study conducted by the Anti-Violence project, almost half of LGBT domestic violence victims were refused service when they sought help at a shelter, and more than half were denied protection orders. This bill would ensure that LGBT couples are given the same protection as same-sex couples.

Republicans are balking at these provisions, but vow to present a plan of their own. Our guess is it will involve sticking their fingers in their ears, humming loudly and pretending that these sexual abuses aren't real until they go away.
