We got spirit, yes we do! We got spirit, how ‘bout you?
Tomorrow, October 19, is Spirit Day, an annual memorial to young people who have taken their own lives after being bullied and a celebration of those who are still with us. Begun in 2010, Spirit Day is a way to look back on tragedies like the suicide of Tyler Clementi while reminding at-risk LGBT youths that things will get better and that they have support.
One way to show your support is by turning your Facebook cover and photo and Twitter pic purple for the day. GLAAD created a fun little gadget that lets you do just that. You can also change your iPhone or Android phone pics purple using an app downloadable from the Apple Store or Google Play. Make sure to share using the hashtag #SpiritDay.
Also, speaking of social media, be sure to make your support known by tweeting and posting to Facebook about Spirit Day and by sharing your friends’ posts (and this story, of course).
Since you’ll be spending at least some of the day existing in the physical world, be sure to change yourself purple! Your clothes, that is, but if you feel like going full-on head-to-toe violet, more power to you! The more subtle folks among us can simply wear a purple shirt or pants (or both). Or a purple hat, or purple shoes, or a purple watch…the possibilities are endless. Even your dog can go purple for Spirit Day!
We here at the NewNowNext offices plan to participate in full force, too! Once you’ve donned your purple apparel, log back in and check out a special video featuring some fuchsia folks at Logo chatting about where they get their Spirit, right here on NewNowNext.
