Donald Trump Calls Chelsea Manning An "Ungrateful Traitor"

"Terrible!"

In one of his latest twitter rants, President Donald Trump called Chelsea Manning an "ungrateful traitor" after Manning shared an op-ed piece she wrote for The Guardian where she stated that America needs "a strong and unapologetic progressive to lead us."

"The one simple lesson to draw from President Obama's legacy: do not start off with a compromise," wrote Manning. "They won't meet you in the middle. Instead, what we need is an unapologetic progressive leader."

Trump tweeted that Manning called Obama a "weak leader" but Manning never actually wrote that in her op-ed. It was after a Fox News report on Manning that featured a banner on the screen that read "UNGRATEFUL TRAITOR" that Trump sent out his tweet. Fox News commentator Abby Huntsman said Obama was "a weak leader with few permanent accomplishments."

Last week, Obama largely commuted the rest of Chelsea Manning’s prison sentence. She will now be released in five months as opposed to 2045.

Manning was convicted in 2013 for leaking more than 700,000 confidential military and State Department documents to WikiLeaks while she was working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq.

In 2014, the ACLU sued the U.S. Department of Defense on her behalf for barring treatment of her gender dysphoria. Though two separate Army medical specialists had confirmed the dysphoria and deemed it medically necessary for Manning to begin hormone therapy, the Army refused to budge.

Manning is now scheduled to be released from prison on May 17, 2017.
