Donald Trump On Reversing Marriage Equality: "It's Not Going To Happen"

He also has some things to say about Caitlyn Jenner's new reality show.

Donald Trump is currently the GOP frontrunner in the race to the 2016 presidential election — a spot he's occupied since the very moment he announced his candidacy from the lobby of Trump Tower in New York City.

His stance on same-sex marriage — he's "for traditional marriage" — isn't favorable for the LGBT community but, according to Mr. Trump in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, it's not an issue anyone needs to be concerned with anymore.

"Some people have hopes of passing amendments, but it's not going to happen," he said when asked whether same-sex marriage is "a dead issue" after the Supreme Court's favorable June ruling. "Congress can't pass simple things, let alone that. So anybody that's making that an issue is doing it for political reasons. The Supreme Court ruled on it."

And even though the billionaire businessman favors "traditional marriage" over marriage equality, that doesn't mean he won't support his gay friends getting married. Asked whether he's been to a gay wedding since the Supreme Court's ruling, Trump said, "Yes, I have. [Broadway theater owner] Jordan Roth…Great guy."

THR writer Janice Min also asked Trump about transgender politics — something "we have" now, according to her. Her question unfortunately didn't address the shocking transgender murder crisis facing the community currently, and instead focused on Caitlyn Jenner:

THR: And now we have Caitlyn Jenner and transgender politics; things have moved fast.

Trump: How did that show do? Somebody said it was going badly.

THR: I Am Cait started out strong on E!, fell sharply the second week and fell again in the third.

Trump: I'm not surprised at the ratings. I just think it wouldn't interest you. I knew him a little bit when Bruce was a great athlete. He was one of the best-looking people you'll ever see.

Perhaps someday we'll get a straightforward answer about transgender issues from Mr. Trump. In the meantime, it's worth noting that Trump owns the Miss USA pageant, which was the first mainstream beauty pageant to allow transgender women to compete. In June, officials at Miss USA invited Caitlyn Jenner to be a pageant judge, though she ultimately declined.
