“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Meets Downhill Drag Race At Aspen Gay Ski Week

How did Shangela, Katya and Alaska judge this year's costumes?

For four decades now LGBT snow bunnies have been trekking to Colorado for Aspen Gay Ski Week.

Over the years the Downhill Drag Race has become one of the most anticipated events of the week. Teams of skiers make their way down Aspen mountain in over-the-top costumes that judges score on a scale from 1-10 and whichever team has the most points wins the $1,000 grand prize.

Last year’s wacky costumes included giant mushrooms, YouTuber Max Emerson dressed as a Ninja Turtle, and a brave snowboarder dressed as the bus from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert!

This year RuPaul’s Drag Race alums Shangela, Katya and Alaska were the special judges of the competition.

“It’s the most fun year yet,” Kevin McManamon, the president of AspenOUT told Aspen Public Radio. “LOGO TV has just put us right over the cliff with success. The exposure helps us a lot. For 2017, the media exposure is priceless.”

Not only is Aspen Gay Ski Week full of fun parties and events, it’s also a fundraiser for the LGBT organizations in the Roaring Fork Valley area. Last year AspenOUT awarded more than $50,000 in grants to the LGBT community.

“Nobody knows how to put on a party more than the gay community,” Melissa Temple, president of AspenOUT, told Aspen Daily Press. “It’s an opportunity to meet and greet people and make new friends from around the world.”

“It’s one week when people who cross-dress or are transgendered feel safe and loved and it’s nice to see people who they really are who are normally quite closeted,” added Temple.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
