Downton Abbey is about to get a whole lot more real with the news that England’s national treasure, Ms. Maggie Smith, will be going head to head with America’s national treasure, Shirley MacLaine, in season three of the popular show. It. Is. On.
MacLaine will be playing Martha Levinson, Cora’s American mother, on the program. Given that it was Cora’s fortune that helped secure Downton Abbey for the Granthams after they fell on hard times, there should be some quite amazing fireworks and fighting. Also, load and loads of quips and joking no doubt; poverty jokes, bad American steretype jokes, ginger jokes. It also must be noted that now that we think of it, Edith does in many ways look like a young MacLaine.
Even better, we know Thomas is going to be all about Ms. Martha Levinson. Trust us.
The fact that we will have to wait over a year to see this however is not making us super happy. Maybe next year PBS can learn air the show at the same time as ITV in England. Please.
