Dozens Injured As Dance Floor Collapses In Gay Nightclub In Tenerife

The Butterfly Disco Pub is a popular attraction on the island.

Some 40 people were injured when the dance floor at a gay disco on Tenerife suddenly collapsed late Saturday night.

There was little warning of the danger: Video shows a drag queen performing at the Butterfly Disco about 02:30am local time when patrons fell through the basement, some suffering broken bones.

The disco is located in a shopping center on the island's main strip, Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina. Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, is popular with tourists from across Europe—those injured are believed to be from Spain, France, the UK, Belgium, Romania and elsewhere.

Emergency services spent hours evacuating the wounded, though no casualties have been reported.

"Our main concern was making sure as many people as possible got out safely and after that I don't know what happened inside," said a spokesperson for the club. "I don't want to start talking about what might have gone wrong before we speak properly to the police and lawyers and they are able to investigate what had happened."
