"Dracula Untold" Star Luke Evans' Strange Journey In And Out Of The Closet

If there's any reason to go see Dracula Untold—and thats a big if, considering the negative buzz the movie is getting—it's to see Luke Evans, the film's brooding leading man.

Evans recently spoke with the Telegraph about the movie, which focuses more on the historical Dracula than the bloodsucking monster we're familiar with. ‘The film is about the transition Vlad made on a human level, after being taken captive by the Ottoman court and reared as a child by his father’s enemy, the first sultan," he says.

Speaking of transitions, Evans has gone through an odd one himself in regards to his sexual orientation. Early in his career, the 35-year-old Welshman was candid about being gay—telling The Advocate in 2002, "If that means I'm going to be a poor man at 60, then at least I've lived a happy, open, gay life and not had to hide it from anybody."

He even told GaydarNation about his preferences in gay porn: "Now I have a good collection and I add to it regularly."

But in 2009, Evans signed with new management—and a year later, he was suddenly dating fashion publicist Holly Goodchild. "We are nowhere near engaged but things are really good," she told the paper.

luke evansAsked about the sudden change, Evans' publicist said the Immortals actor "[opened up] a long time ago when he was an inexperienced, young actor... and now with maturity and hindsight, he has learned not to engage the press in his personal life again."

Um, except to say he's dating a publicist?

In 2012, Evans' Hobbit co-star Ian McKellen inadvertently re-outed him in an interview, saying "Look only at how many gay actors are in Hobbit—two of the dwarves, along with Luke Evans, Stephen Fry and Lee Pace." (Don't even get us started about Pace.)

These days, Evans seems to be avoiding the issue altogether. Asked by the Telegraph about being out early in his career, he responded:

"As I’ve grown up in this business over the past five or six years I’ve realized that there’s very little you can keep private," he says now.

"So I’m protecting the only bit that I have any control over. My private life feels like the last thing I can keep hold of."

Does he regret being so open early on? "I’m very happy with who I am – and so are my family."

Well, that clears everything up.

Look, we're not trying to out anyone who's closeted, but in the 21st century it's pretty tough to put the gay genie back in the bottle. Or coffin, as the case may be.
