In the clip below, Ru explains that the song has special meaning to her. "When my mother who had suffered from a long bout with cancer finally passed away I was listening to this song incessantly. It has a lyric, 'Momma said "never give up"' and I've used it as my anthem. I want each of you girls to know that even through adversity-- or even death-- that love and energy lives forever."

RuPaul's words take on a stronger resonance in hindsight. Sahara Davenport sadly passed away in October of 2012.
