Dressing Like a Millionaire: New Year's Style Resolutions

A weekly segment in which we capture the Downton Abbey look at Roseanne re-run prices.

Unlike that Rosetta Stone: French which will still remain as incomprehensible as very cultured coughing for another year there are a few wearable resolutions you might actually be able to embrace for 2013. We’ve identified four ways to make your existing closet feel new without having to shed everything you already own like some kind of holiday related egg nog gut.

[caption id="attachment_83860" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Sportcoats from Brooks Brothers and Suitsupply Brooks Brother's knitted blazer and SuitSupply's tweed are the strong silent types[/caption]

Buy the Swiss Army Knife of Sportcoats

This is the kind of jacket that can do pretty much anything fairly well and most things very well. For example this knitted blazer from Brooks Brothers that should cover for work attire over a shirt and tie unless you’ve got Alfred Nobb’s job, and will definitely more than suffice with a T-shirt for time spent out of office. For those who prefer a more structured existence, I’ve embraced a half lined wool blend tweed blazer similar to this one from SuitSupply that carries through the undeniable air of academic expertise of heavier tweeds but without all the wooly bulk. Either option will act like MSG for your closet and bring out the best flavors in everything you already own.

Allow Your Accessories To Use Outdoor Voices

With the acceptable level for pant hems hovering anywhere between ankle and mid calf these days, sock flashing is unavoidable and as a result hosiery choices are becoming nearly as important as your necktie. The way to use this to your advantage is to make some bold choices that will reveal your inner anarchist even when suited up for The Man. Paul Smith has been making a full lurid menu for years, or to just get your toe wet with something for less than half the price you could try this option from Marc Jacobs or American Apparel. Since sleeve lengths are also headed the same direction as pant hems (ever upwards) classic, minimal watch designs in neo-classical colors like the luna watch from Alessi and the all white rebel from Swatch will get your wrist noticed without making it look like Queen Elizabeth's headgear.

Embrace an Aggro Tie or Two

Like your new brassy socks, a bold tie or three is the prefect way to take your solid or striped shirts and sportcoats to a new level of nattiness next year. 1930's inspired geometric designs like these from Duchamp, Gitman Vintage, and Fairfax are all grounded in enough history to avoid any airport gift shop comparisons while still loud enough that they won't soon be forgotten.

Get to Know a Tailor

I too have a portion of my closet that feels like the Land of Forgotten Dreams. Pants with fallen hems, jackets with sleeves that are just slightly too short, coats that need to slimmed down... All of it is just off enough to make it look like the kid with bad skin and a thyroid problem during prom season every time I’m picking out what I want to wear. You’ve most likely been told to do this before, and like me ignored it, with excuses about laziness or expense however Styleforum has made it too easy to ignore any longer.  Type “tailor” and your nearest city or cultural capitol into the search function and proceed to scroll through several pages of the fanciest men on the internet debating it out on quality vs. price vs. thickness of accent.
