The Stonewall Riots Get An Incredible — And Accurate! — Reenactment On "Drunk History"

"[Marsha P. Johsnon] really was a badass. And so brave!"

Comedy Central's Drunk History tells the real story of what went down at the 1969 Stonewall riots in an impressive dramatic reenactment to coincide with LGBT history month, which runs through October.

The skit centers around the real-life heroes who "threw the first brick," so to speak— LGBT trailblazers Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, played by trans actresses Alexandra Grey and Trace Lysette, respectively.

It is more or less a direct revision of Roland Emmerich's 2015 drama Stonewall, which told the same story but drew heavy criticism for silencing the voices of Johnson and Rivera in lieu of casting a cisgender white male actor to play the imaginary star role.

In the six-minute clip, comedian Crissle West nurses a glass of whiskey as she recounts the day Johnson declared she'd "had enough" of the illegal police raids targeting New York City's LGBT community, and launched the LGBT rights movement by taking "the shot glass heard round the world" and throwing it into a mirror.

"She really was a badass," West asserts. "And so brave, like I would not have been that brave in the '60s and '70s."

"It was bad enough being black, but add in a queer identity and then a queer gender identity too? It was a lot. And she still faced it!"
