Wade Family Dons Matching Looks for Daughter Zaya's First Red Carpet
Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union-Wade are continuing to show the world what supporting your transgender kid looks like.
At last weekend's Better Brothers of Los Angeles Truth Awards, the Wade family hit the red carpet running, with Dwyane and Gabrielle sporting bold, color-blocked suiting to match Zaya's flawless green, pink, and black look. As Dwyane revealed on Instagram, the Saturday night event marked the 12-year-old's first time walking a red carpet—and her first major public appearance after coming out as trans to her parents.
Back in February, Dwyane got candid about Zaya on The Ellen Show, opening up for the first time to host Ellen DeGeneres about being "proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community" with his wife.
"Last night was Zaya’s first red carpet, and we couldn’t have been prouder of how she handled the questions that were asked of her," the former NBA star wrote to his 16.2 million Instagram followers on Saturday. "She has emerged as one of the young faces and voices for the LGBTQ+ community."
The Wade fam attended the event in support of Styling Hollywood stars and design duo Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis.
It was the perfect occasion for Zaya's couture debut, too, since the Truth Awards were "created to recognize and highlight the accomplishments of the Black LGBTQ+ community and its allies," Dwyane noted in a separate Instagram post:
In doing so, [Better Brothers of Los Angeles] increase the awareness of [their] contributions to Society, Popular Culture and the Arts, and help refocus the lens through which they are seen. The Truth Awards also provides funding for scholarships that supports educational opportunities for youth in the LGBTQ+ community!
Gabrielle also chimed in on Instagram, sharing a series of photos and videos of the trio serving looks.
"We keep leading with love, light, and hope for a better more inclusive world," the actress and children's book author wrote, adding that she was "moved to tears" multiple times throughout the night by her preteen daughter's poise.
"Stay put and stay mad if you want," Gabrielle added. "We keep it pushing. Always."
