Did Disney Censor a Gay Kiss From its E3 Gaming Expo Broadcast?

The censorship claims center on a kiss between two female characters for "The Last of Us Part II."

A recent controversy at this year's E3 Electronic Gaming Expo has left fans questioning whether Disney censored a gay kiss in one of the videos.

The convention was broadcast from Las Vegas on one of Disney's cable channels, Disney XD, with the help of gaming news website IGN.

As The Verge writes, viewers noticed that during the broadcast, there were moments that the stream would get blurry or turn out completely—including some of the most talked about parts of the show. Now fans are calling what happened censorship from the network.

The controversy centered on footage from The Last of Us Part II, which featured two female characters dancing with each other, and later share a kiss. During the broadcast, the kiss cuts out after a few seconds, and a recording of it has since been aired onto YouTube.

Despite fan reactions, a spokesperson for Disney XD is denying that any censorship occurred:

The Disney XD policy does not allow for gratuitous violence in programming that children may be viewing. During the channel’s General Audience, DX|P-branded programming from the E3 gaming conference yesterday, telecast editors omitted content that did not meet our policy standards, including several seconds of an animated video game scene that began with a kiss, but ended with a knife attack in which a character’s throat was slashed. Only the latter, violent portion of the scene was not televised from the event.

This lines up with scenes displayed after the kiss, where scenes of violence were blurred out.

This isn't the first instance of major media companies censoring LGBTQ content: For more than a year, queer YouTubers have griped publicly about their content being demonetized or restricted to certain viewers.
