Ed Sheeran has defended his use of the word "faggot" during a freestyle rap battle, claiming the homophobic slur was fair game because he was "sending up rappers who make homophobic remarks."

A five-minute video of Sheeran's so-called "freestyle battle" with controversial English rapper Devlin, taken in 2011, was pulled from YouTube at the behest of Warner Music Group this week, citing a "copyright claim."

In it, Sheeran is reportedly seen holding a pint of beer and spitting verses that use the word "gay" as a slur. At one point, he refers to Devlin as a "faggoty man."

The Mirror reports:

He continues: “I go on the bus and I sleep for a day, then I come back and they’re like, Ed, you look like this gay.”

He adds: “These guys are safe they’re not gay mans.”

In a statement, a spokesman for Sheeran refused to acknowledge the harmful nature of equating "gay" with "bad," or using "faggot" as a slur among straight men. "Ed was sending up rappers who make homophobic remarks," he said. "He is clearly not homophobic."

The singer, most famous for being friends with Taylor Swift, has previously come out in support of the LGBT community.

In 2013, he tweeted at the Westboro Baptist Church, who were protesting Taylor Swift's Kansas City stop on the Red tour:

In February, we learned he even treated Taylor's dancers to a night at a local gay strip club in Atlanta. "He even paid for the dancer — whose birthday it was — to have a private session!” Now magazine reported at the time.
