The editor of Bangladesh's only LGBT magazine has been hacked to death, the BBC reports.

Julhas Mannan, an LGBT rights activist and editor at Roopbaan, formerly worked as a protocol officer at the U.S. embassy. One other person was murdered and another seriously injured in the attack, which happened in an apartment in Dhaka.

Earlier in the week, Muslim extremists murdered a university professor in a similarly gruesome manner—and secular writers have also been killed in recent months—though the government maintains the Islamic State has no presence in Bangladesh.

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Bangladesh, lumped in among the "unnatural offenses" punishable by fines and up to life in prison.
