Man Arrested In Cairo Bathhouse Raid Sets Himself On Fire

One of the 26 men arrested in a gay bathhouse raid in Cairo last December reportedly attempted suicide by setting himself on fire.

Though the suspects were all acquitted last month, intense public scrutiny—spurred by a government-sponsored TV station—caused difficulty for the men. The bathhouse raid, along with the imprisonment of several men involved in a same-sex wedding video, have marked a particularly homophobic chapter in Egyptian history.

According to the Washington Blade, the man who attempted suicide set his hands and feet on fire, but survived. He spoke with Egyptian newspaper El-Watan about his experience: “I’m harassed constantly in my workplace by the words of the people and the looks in their eyes," he said.

In hospital, the man claimed he is suffering from neglect. “I am very, very tired,” he said. “I want to go to a clean hospital.”
