Elaine Stritch: There's "Nothing Worse Than Ending Up Like" Bea Arthur

Elaine Stritch has left the bustle of Manhattan for the quiet of Michigan, but that doesn't mean the legendary lady has retired. Stritch is out promoting her new documentary, Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me, and gave a wonderful interview to Between the Lines' Chris Azzopardi.

The two talked of many things—including kindred spirit Stephen Sonheim, former flame Rock Hudson and Stritch's old frenemy, Bea Arthur. The two actresses had both auditioned for Dorothy bea arthurZbornak on The Golden Girls (can you imagine!) and Stritch was devastated that Arthur got the part.

She's made peace with it since then, of course—or has she?

"My feelings were very hurt by that, but I'm awful glad I didn't do it," Stritch reveals. "I could've made a lot of money, but nothing's worse than ending up like... there's a lot of money out in Hollywood. It's a killer. I could've made a lot of money if I played ball, but I didn't wanna play ball. And I didn't wanna play sitcoms for the rest of my life, and that's what I would've done."

The 30 Rock star later went on to praise Arthur calling her "a great dame." "But I wouldn't wanna be her," she insists. "Well, she's dead, so I'd rather be me now."
