Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert relayed to her Facebook followers some lovely news regarding her relationship with writer-musician Rayya Elias. “Over the last year, Rayya Elias and I have been through some really difficult days together—but not today,” Gilbert writes. “Today was precious and perfect. A simple and spontaneous ceremony of love, surrounded by a handful of friends and family.”
Gilbert notes that “the quiet and private celebration” was “nothing legally binding”; rather, it was a commitment ceremony of sorts, dedicated to “what we have long known to be true: We belong to each other.”
Gilbert, a best-selling author who also wrote the creative thinking how-to book Big Magic, came out about her relationship with Elias in a Facebook post in September 2016, detailing how their long-time friendship turned romantic, before revealing that Elias had a serious cancer diagnosis.
In her new Facebook post, Gilbert writes that there are “more difficult days are to come. It doesn’t get easier from here. Rayya’s illness is grave. But our love is strong. We will walk together as far as we can go together. After that, it all gets turned over to God.”
Gilbert was previously married to José Nunes, who she split up with last year before announcing her relationship with Elias.
