Given the anxiety-inducing state of politics and looming holiday stressors, we could all use an extra dose of joy.
Thankfully, 19-year-old Elle Mills posted a video of her family and friends’ reactions to her coming out, and the result is a heartwarming tearjerker.
Mills is a Canadian YouTuber best known for parody videos like “If Stranger Things Were a Romantic Comedy,” along with her lifestyle channel, ElleOfTheMills.
One of the most frequently asked questions in her comments section is whether she’s queer, so Mills decided to finally give her fans a direct answer: She shares her journey to realizing she’s bisexual, saying she repressed her attraction to women until she met the girl she’s currently crushing on too hard to deny.
Mills then comes out to her friends one by one on camera, capturing a range of heartfelt reactions.
“You can’t be gay,” one pal jokes, “I’m gay!”
While she appears excited to seeing her friends’ responses, Mills expresses fear about coming out to her family. At one point, she even cries on camera.
“I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little scared,” she says. “Growing up, there’s always been a negative undertone about the LGBTQ+ community, and I’m scared that my relationships with the people in my life right now are gonna be different.”
We won’t spoil their reaction, but let’s just say it’s not the negative experience she predicts.
After coming out to several family members, Mills takes a moment to formally reintroduce herself to the world:
“Hi,” she says, smiling proudly. “I’m Elle Mills, and I’m bisexual.”
