Ellen DeGeneres On Her Very Public Coming Out: "There Was A Whole Lot Of Anger And Depression"

Coming out isn't always easy, but DeGeneres proves that things often get better.

Nearly two decades after revealing her sexuality to the world, talk show host and Finding Dory star Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about the pain she felt after coming out.

The 58-year-old star reflected on the experience in a recent interview with the Daily Mail. She remarked that though she was initially celebrated for disclosing her identity, very soon thereafter things changed for the worse.

"Then it just turned, and I mean, turned," she said. "Obviously, worrying about what would happen afterwards is why it took me so long to come out."

"Afterwards, there were jokes at my expense and I couldn't turn on the TV at night without some comedian or talk show host making fun of me," she added. "Not for a minute did I regret doing what I did, but it was hard."

This period was not only emotionally trying for DeGeneres, but financially as well. "There was a whole lot of anger and depression, and it was scary because I was also running out of money."

But now, with her celebrated daytime talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the blockbuster success of both Finding Nemo and Finding Dory and her longtime partnership with wife Portia de Rossi, she admits that her life and career "couldn't be in a better place."
