Today, President Obama handed out his final Presidential Medals of Freedom to 21 recipients including Diana Ross, Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres.

In a live video from the ceremony, DeGeneres is praised for her career—including coming out on her sitcom back in 1997: "her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nation's constant drive towards equality and acceptance for all."
